Dungeons and Dragons, anyone?
So, last year a group of students came to me and asked me to sponsor the soon to be formed D&D group. I liked the kids who asked; I like D&D, so it seemed like a no-brainer to say sure.
The kids were delighted. Only later did I come to understand that they had some doubts about my understanding of what I'd signed up for....
Theresa came back with a slightly concerned look on her face and a skeptical tone in her voice as she asked me, "Do you know what D&D is?"
I looked up in surprise and said, "Dungeons and Dragons? Yes, I know what it is." The look which flowed over her face was one of pure delight and relief.
The new block lunch started this year and the kids have an hour for lunch during which time they have clubs, interest groups, and a variety of organizations to invest time in. Depending on the situation the kids just ebb and flow rather like shoals of fish in a coral reef. It's an amazing thing to watch.
But, you may be wondering, just how much gaming can really happen in an hour? Well, that is why we decided to game on Monday nights from 4PM to 8PM. It's an interesting experience in teenage dynamics. My basic purpose is to supervise the kids, make photocopies of character sheets, store materials, and be an interested audience for tales of adventure.
I also use the time to get a great deal of work done every week and it is very nice to be able to do so.
